Our Burning Man bike project is a not-for-profit social enterprise, whose mission is to utilize the waste of burners to help in disaster zones.
It all started when thousands of burners were tragically separated from their two wheeled man-powered personal transportation machines. We initially collected these orphaned bikes to ship them to a disaster zone, but it turned out that purchasing them new in the location would be cheaper.
So instead of shipping the bikes we decided to create Art Bike Relief. We noticed there were private companies renting bikes and thought we could do the same while providing burners with a non-profit option. We rent the bikes we collected to burners who don’t have the ability to bring their own bikes. Is it more self reliant than buying your bike at Walmart last minute?
Why are we doing this we hope you might ask. The best part is that this each year, a new project will be funded from the revenue we generate from pre-playa bike rentals, services, and off playa sale of accessories.
